Alternative Learning Programme
The Alternative Learning Programme is a school of around 250 boys and girls, who have a low level of maths and literacy. These are aged between 15 and 16 years. The aim is that through teaching them vocational subjects they can be prepared for the world of work. Many of the students come from deprived areas with a baggage of social problems. Through both their academic and vocational learning (ed. Hospitality, Sports, Beauty Care, welding and plumbing amongst others), the students can have a holistic education which will lead them to find a job in the future.
The school activities are focused on combating Early School Leaving and ensuring a Holistic Education for our students.
This is achieved through literacy classes and also numeracy classes which are held on a daily basis. Classes are kept small with a maximum of ten students in each class. This ensures individual attention and also helps the teacher to manage classroom behaviour better.
According to the EU law, the government is committed to cut down the rate of early school leaving from 20 per cent to ten per cent by 2020.
Hence the setting up of our school which offers vocational courses. Various studies are showing that there are students who absentee themselves from school because they are not academically inclined. This school seeks to reach out to these students by offering them a curriculum which is tailored for their needs. Thus they learn skills which will be useful in future so that they can earn a living.
Moreover, to make their experience at school more holistic, a number of programmes are on offer which one does not find in a normal main stream school. These include:
Health week: the students are made aware of how important it is to stay healthy, cook healthy meals and avoid junk food. They have nutrition talks, outings related to staying healthy, visits by dentists and doctors who do check ups.
Financial literacy plan: the students are made aware of how important it is to manage money. They visit bank and they are given talks by bank staff about online banking , credit cards and how to use the ATM.
Outdoor Adventure Week: A whole week is reserved for outdoor activities, were students practice skills like absailing, trekking etc. The aim is to help them be healthy, appreciate the environment, and also to instil self discipline.
Hands on Training: All students at our school are sent on training courses which are related to the vocational subjects. Some examples are :those in hospitality will have an experience in a Hotel. The carpentry students are enrolled for a week in a manufacturing factory, while welding students were involved in an intensive training course at the Motherwell Bridge company.
Prince’s Trust: So that students would not leave without any certificate, the Prince’s Trust Programme was introduced. This programme is made up of two units. The first unit assesses the personal skills and the second is about employability skills of the candidate. Students are involved in various activities, like community work and other activities, about which they have to write in their personal portfolio. The portfolio will then be assessed and the students participating in this programme receive a certificate of participation.
Our school has experience in dealing with disadvantaged students, hence our motivation to be part of this project. We think that our school can be a lot of expertise to the table.
